The cover of PET and other banned books, with details about the Black Banned Books Club event below them (same info on this page).

Join us and read a book that have been challenged and banned. Student Leadership and Civic Engagement believes that reading these censored stories is critical in developing our perspective, our values, and our leadership.

This month we will be collaborating with the Black Cultural Center, the Gender and Sexuality Center, and the Women's Leadership and Resource Center.

October's Banned Book Club will meet in the Black Cultural Center Gallery to dive into PET by Akwaeke Emezi. If you register ahead of time, we will email you a few days before the book club to confirm your participation and reserve your book. If you do not RSVP, available books will be first come, first serve. We will have 15 books total to give away to readers!

"There are no monsters anymore, or so the children in the city of Lucille are taught. Jam and her best friend, Redemption, have grown up with this lesson all their life. But when Jam meets Pet, a creature made of horns and colors and claws, who emerges from one of her mother’s paintings and a drop of Jam’s blood, she must reconsider what she’s been told. Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption’s house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth, and the answer to the question–How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist?

A riveting and timely young adult debut novel that asks difficult questions about what choices you can make when the society around you is in denial."
