Black and Latinx women students are invited to join us for a conversation with Black and Latinx women student leaders about their academic, leadership, and personal experiences at UIC; what they wish they had known when they first got here; and advice for thriving in school and their chosen fields.

Learn about their journeys, connect with each other, and explore how we can build bridges of solidarity across campus.

About our moderator:

Jazmin Vega is a second-year graduate student in UIC's Urban Planning and Policy program and a graduate assistant at the Women's Leadership and Resource Center. She received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in political science and a BA in women’s studies from Metropolitan State University of Denver. During her undergraduate experience, Jazmin worked as a peer mentor with students learning how to navigate higher education. In that work, she centered students' struggles to find and connect to valuable campus resources and building space for first-generation students of color. She is deeply committed to her communities and doing work that matters.

Jocelyn Bravo | Economics major | UIC Student Trustee | President, Economics Club | Vice President of Fellowship, Alpha Phi Omega | University of Illinois Chicago

Jocelyn Bravo is from Chicago, IL and is a senior majoring in economics and minoring in business administration and sociology. She is a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), as well as the Honors College. This year, Jocelyn is serving as the UIC student trustee on the University of Illinois System Board of Trustees, President of the Economics Club, Vice President of Fellowship for Alpha Phi Omega, and member of LARES Leaders. She also works for the Latino Policy Forum as Multicultural Leadership Academy Intern and as an LAS Recruitment Team Leader. Jocelyn previously worked on the Youth Relationships Study as a research assistant and studied the effects of community-based mentoring on underrepresented youth. As an Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program fellow, she's currently analyzing the political engagement of undocumented Latinos and noncitizen voting rights in the United States.

Alexis Grant | PhD candidate, Community Health Sciences | President, Black Graduate Student Association | President, Graduate Christian Fellowship | Organizer, Good Trouble Coalition | University of Illinois Chicago

Alexis Grant is a 3rd year PhD candidate in Community Health Sciences at the UIC School of Public Health. She is a student, researcher, teacher, and organizer, and these paths cross often through her various roles at UIC. Alexis is also one of the founders of the Black Graduate Student Association and an organizer with the Good Trouble Coalition, both of which continue to work for the inclusion and well-being of all students at UIC. Alexis holds a master’s degree in Behavioral and Social Health Sciences from Brown University and bachelors degrees in English and Psychology from Howard University. After she completes her degree at UIC she plans to become a professor and continue her research, teaching, and advocacy.

Kiera Hardin | Human Resources Management major | President, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Omicron Beta Chapter | Vice President, UIC National Pan-Hellenic Council | University of Illinois Chicago

Kiera Hardin is a senior graduating in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management and a minor in Black Studies. She is also the president of the Omicron Beta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. at UIC.

Ashaley Hassel | Business Management major | President, Black Student Union | Member, Business Diversity Committee | University of Illinois Chicago

Ashaley Hassel is a senior majoring in Business Management with a minor in African American Studies. Ashaley serves as the 2020-2021 Black Student Union President and is on the Business Diversity Committee, among other organizations on campus.

LeRayah Neely-Brown | Mathematics and Computer Science major | President, SISTERS | University of Illinois Chicago

LeRayah Neely-Brown (she/her/hers) is a fourth year, First-Generation student at UIC. She majors in Mathematics and Computer Science. She is the president of SISTERS, a UIC Campus Housing organization that is dedicated to building a safe space and sisterhood for Black women and non-binary folks on campus. In her spare time she enjoys writing code for music applications, event planning, and building furniture with her mother.
