Welcome to Fall 2023 at WLRC!

The beginning of the UIC school year is a busy time for the cultural centers, as we welcome new students to the university, get ready to launch new programs, hire and train new student workers, onboard new staff, tweak existing program offerings, and generally figure out how far we can stretch our program dollars to provide enriching and thought-provoking co-curricular programming for the campus community. It’s work that is both challenging and rewarding; we are grateful to be doing it in Illinois and at this university, where there is broad support for the kind of programming that we do.

At WLRC, we launched the semester on August 28 with a scavenger hunt that we hope students (whether new or continuing) will enjoy and find inspiring.

We have also been training our newest cohort of Diversity Community Engagement Program (DCEP) interns about how to do outreach and engagement on behalf of the center and its programs. Look out for them in the coming weeks!

We invite you to our Open House on Thursday, September 7 (Suite 1700, SSB) to learn about the initiatives we are involved in, and how you can get or stay involved with the center. We treasure your participation, insights, and ideas for how the center can best support you.

Check out the listing of Open Houses for all the cultural centers as well (details below). Visit as many as you can!

Are there topics that you would like to see addressed (more often or at all) in our newsletter? Chances are, you are not the only one who is thinking about it. For example, maybe Barbie, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce took up a lot of room in your summer plans, and you want to process some of it. Or, maybe you took the time to read books that I recommended back in May. Or, maybe you did a combination of things that got you thinking, “I know what the newsletter should talk about next!” We want to hear from you—email us at wlrc@uic.edu and we will do our best to start a conversation.

Until next time,
